Isolation Transformer

Isolation Transformer can be best defined as a device which is used to transfer electrical power from AC, Alternating Current to some Equipment while isolating the connected Device from the power source. Galvanic Isolation is provided by isolation transformers and they are mostly used to protect from electricity shock, suppress the electrical noises etc. There is a special insulation between primary and secondary which is designed to withstand high voltage between windings. Isolation transformers block transmission of DC signals from one circuit to the other, but allow AC signals to pass. Isolation transformers with electrostatic shields are used for power supplies for sensitive equipment such as computers or laboratory instruments.

An isolation transformer could have primary and secondary coils that are wound the same in order to keep the same voltage but separate two circuits by inducing a current from one coil to the other rather than having a direct connection.

Isolation Transformers can be made as Step Down Isolation Transformer , If the primary coil is wound more than the secondary coil, the voltage is decreased.

In case of Step Up Isolation Transformer, the secondary coil is wound more than the primary coil and the voltage is increased.
